A list always made Mia feel better and as soon as she’d written everything down, she gulped down the last of her tea and went back to her bedroom to open up her laptop at her desk and get working. She spent a happy few hours organising photos and uploading all the material and cataloguing what she’d bought in Germany. Her favourite new ornaments, she distributed around the flat to make it look more festive for Christmas. Tick, the first item was achieved and Mia made herself a celebratory coffee and nibbled on one of the left over cakes from the Christmas market before she realised that she was meant to be on a juice fast until Christmas. Ooops! She thought to herself and then felt better when she remembered that at least she’d been running that morning.

Now she opened up the laptop again and sitting in front of the blank screen made her run back and pour herself another cup of coffee. Always procrastinating, she thought to herself. She then spent ages frothing the milk in order to buy a bit more time. Finally, she was ready to work. She headed back to the computer and started writing random notes — that was the easiest way to start she always found. Then she decided if she posted a blog about it then she might get inspired and could always use that as a basis for the actual book chapter. She drained the last of her coffee and licked her finger to pick up the last of the crumbs. In for a penny, in for a pound — or five, she said wryly to herself.

Frohe Weihnachten

Perhaps it’s because Germany is associated in my head with fairy tales; just think of the brothers Grimm for instance, but there is a special kind of Christmas magic in Germany that somehow takes you back to your childhood and spirits you into a parallel universe — a kind of Narnia where it’s forever Christmas. Or at least that’s how it seemed when I was there last week. The dark woods and the little wooden cottages just lend themselves well to the festive season. Or perhaps it was because of the snow that greeted us on arrival and coated the pretty carved wooden huts of the Christmas market in a glistening white. Perhaps it was the lights and the food, simultaneously warming and hearty, and always full of Christmas spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. Germany, to me is the perfect Christmas destination.

Christmas markets start on the first weekend of Advent and pack up either on the 23rd or the 24th of December. Some of them materialise just at the weekend, but most stay built in towns or cities for the full four weeks. They are little villages unto themselves and full of food, drinks, and Christmas themed ornaments, lights, sometimes antique furniture, and pottery — anything really that you might like to give or receive during the festive season.

When you find them, normally near the centre of a town or a part of town, you enter into a special world.
